The National Union of Seafarers (NUSI) celebrated the “NUSI Founder, Mohamed Ebrahim Serang, Day”
on May 9, 2020, to honour the memory of Mr. Ebrahim Serang who fought against all odds and founded
the National Union of Seafarers of India (NUSI) in the 1920s.
It was because of his challenging efforts, the sacrifices of NUSI leaders, NUSI Executive Committee, Staff,
Branch Representatives and the trust of the seafarers that NUSI is a today a strong body representing
over 1,00,000 seafarers.
The occasion was celebrated on social media virtually.
Coining the phrase “From Womb to Tomb – and sometimes beyond”, NUSI has redefined trade
unionism by its welfare activities in the service of not only the seafarers and their family members, but
the entire shipping fraternity. NUSI also enjoys the support of the shipowners, Maritime Administration
and the Ministry of Shipping.
Mr. Abdulgani Y Serang, General Secretary-cum-Treasurer, NUSI, participating in the virtual meet,
stated, “The Corona Virus pandemic has caused large scale problems in India and throughout the world.
In these challenging times, NUSI team has stood up to support seafarers and their families in particular
and the Government of India in general. We salute all ranks of serving seafarers onboard and ashore. It
is your hard work, your passion, your sacrifices and that of your family, which is immensely contributing
to the prosperity of our Indian economy. We wish all of you and your family to be safe and healthy.
Together we will fight Corona”
For the first time ever NUSI also introduced recognition of shipping companies employing largest
number of women seafarers. The Shipping Corporation of India Ltd. (SCI) and Carnival Support Services
India Pvt. Ltd, received this recognition for recruiting the highest number of women seafarers on
Merchant Ships and Cruise Ships respectively.
Thousands participating in the social media conveyed their best wishes, on Facebook, to Mr. Abdulgani
Serang , who addressed theirs, as well as their families queries.
Well-wishers, delegates from the shipping fraternity, congratulated NUSI on the occasion.
